sports hero, The Australian
swimmer Susie O'Neil, whom I witnessed breaking the 200 meter
butterfly world record in May 2000. This was a record that had stood for
19 years from 1981 when American Mary T Meagher broke it.
The 19-year-old record was the oldest record in international
swimming. My event was also
the 200 meter butterfly, which I swam for 15 years competitively
(considerably slower than Susie and Mary T ! )
